  1. I don't know about the best excuse, but once I had a student call me crying the night of the homework because she'd left it at school and didn't want to get in trouble.  How'd she get my number?  I have no idea!  But I did teach only second grade.  I told her to get to school early and I'd be there and she could finish it then (hey, when a seven-year-old calls you at home in tears about forgetting  her homework, you have to work something out!).

  2. A kid actually used the dog ate it - and I believed it!

He had a parents note saying the dog attacked it, he had a picture of the dog near a mess *and* he brought the chewed remnants - and it *looked* like the dog did actually eat it!

I had it up on the wall with the picture of the dog all year! was great!

  3. "My sister ate it."

It was true. There was the paper, shredded, chewed and a little wet.

  4. A handwritten note from mom explaining how one twin got a concussion wrestling the night before, so she had to take both twins to the ER and thus both of them couldn't study for my test (I had both in the same class)...so could I please excuse them from it?  (I gave the concussed one an extra day but made the healthy brother take it.)

  5. The student used the paper to roll his 'cigs' with.   Hey teach I smoked that HW!

  6. Because the flyers lost....LOL!!!

Ahhahh see I found you trying to date teachers Joe...good job...Too-Shay!!!

  7. "My best friend got hit by the mob, and I've been so distraught that I was unable to focus on the paper."  The sad thing was that it may have been true - the kid himself was a notorious drug dealer.

  8. the best excuse is "family problems".  No teacher can deny that this happens everyday in a lot of families.  The teacher would be a total jerk to punish you with a failing grade, etc, for that.

I have taught from ages 5-20 and know that a lot of the families had major issues, so I didn't ever assign homework to give the kids a break.
