To anyone who has ever had to declare a family member legally/mentally incompetent ???

was it a difficult process to begin? my mom and I are preparing to do this with a family ember who has severe alcoholism and mental illness issues .

We have decided he is a threat to society and himself and his 'feelings' must be put aside and this be done.

what obstacles did you encounter during this?

I have a friend who is currently going through this process with a parent.  Documentation is everything.  Keep records of hospital visits and/or police contact.  Also, write down the details of incidents that happened that brought you to this point.  They should hold the person at least long enough for an evaluation.  Then you go from there.  If they are deemed mentally unfit to care for themselves and have an addiction, they'll be put into a treatment program.
