If I was intending to work to supplement my living abroad any suggestions on what we could do?

What is the cheapest way of travelling at the moment (ferry,plane, rail, etc...)?

Rail is the cheapest all over the world but UK.

On some routes airplane can be less expensive.

I would suggest that you keep enough money to come back home if you so wish.
