  1. There isn't any one path. But you do need to take an active interest in current events, history, political science, etc. Foreign languages are useful as well. They currently give extra points for having hard language skills.

  2. Both George and Joe gave good answers.  Check out www.careers.state.gov.  They have some good info there, and despite how it appears, you don't HAVE to be a minority to enter the Foreign Service (but it does help).  :)

  3. i'm a junior in high school and in the same place as you :)

really you can take whatever you want because it doesn't really matter. Look at the state.gov (i think) and that gives you all the details. To become a foreign service officer you have to pass a test, make it through an interview, background check etc.

Ideally you want to take courses that will prepare you for this vigorous process, but it really doesn't matter as long as you pass the test. Try majoring in international studies with a minor in one of their needed languages (mandarin, arabic, farsi, hindi, russian, swahili) or global econ or something and that will certainly prepare you. Try doing Model UN or studying abroad for a semester if that's an option. Be prepared to go absolutely anywhere! even the least glamorous locales.

(This is all the stuff I am going to try to do, hopefully at georgetown...)

Hope to work together someday in Botswana... or thailand... or djibouti... lol
