To be a good web designer what are things you really should know?

i want to be a good designer and am wondering what are some things i really should brush up on so i could get a good job. preferably people in the buisness i would like to answer. thanks

I assume designer means not so much programming.

I would say, usability and user interface design (Look at other websites, and how they are laid out).

Also brush up on illustrator or photo shop and prototyping \ storyboarding (showing how a website works before its programmed).

If you do mean programming

XHTML + CSS (Strict Web Standards)

Server Side scripting (Look at sites of the companies portfolio and see if they use PHP , Python, ASP, ASP.NET etc to make their websites)

Learning all this should get you on your way

P.S. Programs like Java and Flash are really just gimmicks, and while they have their uses, they are not as important to an employer.
