  1. You have to start by going to college to get a BS degree in preparation for med school. While there, you will take requirements like biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics, along with other recommended coursework like biochemistry, molecular genetics, microbiology, physiology, etc. You apply to medical school the summer after your junior year in college. Once you get into med school, you will be taught what you need to know to become a doctor. You will then apply to a residency in your third year of med school. For cardiovascular surgery, you'll need one year of general surgery and another 4 years of cardiovascular surgery (if my memory serves me correctly, it may be more). After that, you will receive your license to practice.

  2. jxdy11 is close, until the residency part.

After graduating from medical school, you'll need to do a general surgery residency (5-7 yrs) and THEN a CT surgery fellowship (2-3 yrs).

What do you need to know?  It takes about 14 years (after college) to learn it.  You need to know a LOT.

CT surgeons deal with life and death every day, and they do see a fair amount of death.  Not everyone can be saved surgically.

  3. where's the heart

  4. A lot. Start by applying to a college as a pre-med major. After that you need to go to med school. You need to keep your GPA like 3.8 and above.
