Question Details: If I want to be an inventor, so would it be wiser to get a marketing degree or industrial design degree? Or even an engineering degree? I was thinking every great idea needs to be marketed, and I can learn all the technical knowledge (engineering) on my own, because I am a better self learner than learning in a school environment. Any Ideas?

  1. You don't need any kind of degree to be an inventor, just a good idea.  Companies don't hire "inventors" so you might want to consider getting a degree in whatever interests you and that you feel will give you good employability.  .

  2. Inventing is an individual creative process. As a self learner you certainly can set your own course. Industrial designing may side track you. Marketing can help.

  3. It depends what you plan on designing. If you were planning on designing highly technical things which would need to be drawn out of modeled and have stress analysis etc. performed on them then i would say you need engineering degree as it would be a tall order to learn all that by yourself.

If however you want to invent simple good ideas then a degree in product design would be ok.
