My puppy is black except for a tiny white spot on the chest (1 cm in radius) and a 1 cm by 3 cm spot of brown on her side.

  1. Labs come in black, yellow and chocolate.

To be purebred, it has to have parents that are both purebred labs and registered with a reputable kennel club (AKC, UKC, and I think The Field Dog Stud Book registers them too).

About the white spot on your dog, the breed standard says "A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable."

Labs, like many breeds, can be mismarked:

  2. I have a fox red labrador another one of the lab's colors he's purebred but because he has the white diamond on his head and spot on his chest he wouldn't be able to be in a show. So  I would think that while your dog is purebred she isn't show standard which shouldn't really matter unless you were planning on entering her.

  3. NO THEY HAVE LABS THAT ARE SOLID BROWN, BLACK, YELLOW AND EVEN WHITE SOMETIMES. PUREBRED JUST MEANS THE MOTHER AND FATHER WERE BOTH LABS. ALSO, A BLACK FEMALE THAT MATES WITH A BLACK MALE CAN HAVE ALL YELLOW OR ALL BROWN LABS.

  4. The breed standard - its possible she's purebred just not up to show standards.

    Color

The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling. Black--Blacks are all black. A black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. Yellow--Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolate--Chocolates can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification.

  5. Purebreds are going to throw bad markings once in awhile.  It doesn't mean the dog isn't purebred, but it may mean that the dog can't be shown and wouldn't be desirable for breeding.
