If you just want to fly an airplane, I would start with a Sport Pilot's license. It only takes 20 hours flight time (FAA required minimum), but the average is 25-30 hours.  You must pass a written & flight test before a license is issued.  All of your flight time can be applied to higher certificates.  Go to www.sportpilot.org for more details and a list of flight instructors.

Airline Transport Pilot's Licence (ATPL), available through some universities.  Physical fitness, good hearing, eyesight and normal colour vision.

What kind of pilot; commercial or private?  Rotary or fixed; Jet or turboprop?  Private find a school and take lessons.  Commercial - I recommend through the military.  Friend of mine went to an interview once with his privately funded license / 200 hours - while waiting to be called he got to know a bloke visiting for the same interview / post - same age - just finishing in the Navy - better license - no school debt and over 7,000 hours......
