  1. we go leopard shark fishing in san francico bay all the time we use steel leaders cause their little teeth are sharp as h**l,depending on the tide  4 to 6 oz weights on sliders so when fish take bait they feel little resistance, for bait we use whole sardines anchovies work to, run the 2/O or 3/O hook thru baits eye in one out the otherpull leader thru and run hook thru back so as to leave halfof your bait as an appetiser, pull leader snug and starting at the hook  wrap generously with thread. that way you give them the first bite ,its quick and hardsecond bite you should be ready to hook the fish. they fight pretty good for awhile and then seem to give up almost like you lost it keep reeling till it see the boat and they seem to go freaking NUTS all over again, do use a net to land it as it is illegal to use a gaff in california in inland waters and by the way before cleaning them you should bleed them out so as not to ruin the meat and them taste nothing like salmon theyer more like sturgeon      hope this helps you out   catching leopards is a blast when you find em      one more thingtheyer bottom feeders they will eat just about anything we just use sardines

  2. Octopus (small) is the best bait, you can probably find whole ones on sale at an Asian market.  You can use 30lb. test flourocarbon as a leader.  Any rod/reel combo that can handle the 30 lb test will do.  Having a good landing net is necessary to ensure that you don't inadverdantly kill by gaffing an undersize shark (last time I looked California had a 36'' size limit for leopards.

Good luck, they are supposed to taste like salmon.

  3. better check with the D F G for the new size limit on them. But they love sardines and they love clams on 15 pound test green is best I think. I would use clams (even frozen and shelled bait works) use a 1ought baitholder hook and about a thirty inch leader on a swivel with a two ounce sliding sinker on the main line and I would cast right past over the top of the waves breaking the furthest out.
