  1. visual inspect for cracks, missing teeth, etc.

  2. I don't really have an answer, I'm just here to back up csnubl's answer above.  I blew a timing belt on a Volvo once and ended up junking the car, as the repairs would have cost more than the car was worth.

  3. Without pulling the belt to visually inspect it, there is no way. If you go that far, you might as well replace it.

  4. There is no warning sign.  If your timing belt gets too worn, and it slips or breaks, you could suddenly be stranded on the road, with a potentially large repair bill.  With some cars, valves and pistons could collide when the belt breaks.  Generally, the safe thing to do is to replace (or, at least, examine) the belt after about 70,000 miles.

  5. You could spend $250 on an optic fiber bore a scope shove it in there and inspect the whole belt...but that would be more than it would cost to have the job done...check with the manufacturer to see what they suggest for mileage use that as your base for when to change it

  6. last answer hit it on the nose. if in doubt, change it!
