  1. THERE IS NO DATE SET. for the requirement for passports for LAND and SEA travel to and from MEXICO. See site below and read the top half of the page carefully to see that it says "later", but there is no date yet.  It is likely to be after next summer and may be as late as summer 2009.  This State Dep't site is kept updated...it was last updated the 1st wek of Jan. 2008.  You will see MANY people on Answers who say you need passports NOW for LAND travel or will need them after JAN.31...these people areWAAAAYYY behind the times and have NOT read current info.

  2. As of right now, you can cross with only your driver's license, but as of January 31, 2008 you will need a passport or SENTRI card. Or 1 document to prove identity and 1 document to prove citizenship. A document that proves identity is your driver's license.  A document that proves citizenship is your birth certificate or naturalization certificate.  If you are a legal resident you can use your laser visa. Oh, and begging February 1, 2008 you can apply for a passport card that will cost $45 if this is your first time applying for a passport or $20 if you already have a passport book. They say that the cards will be mailed sometime in Spring, but they  don't give the exact date. Sounds like the government is looking for an interest free loan ; )
