My main valve in the basement has a drip leak. Would the water valve outside at the street need to be shut off first?

  1. Don't know, is there a valve at the entrance

  2. Yes , unless you can just tighten the main valve gently in the basement............notice I said "gently".........good luck....If your going to fix it ........turn it off.

  3. The water department is responsible for water up to the water meter. This includes a shut off valve on the street side. There should also be a shut off valve on the house side which you are responsible for. Both valves are located inside your house, and can be used by you. If you turn off the street side valve, you can change your valve(after draining the house water).

  4. I don't live on city water now, but when I lived on city water, I could shut off the water anytime I wanted out on the street without any consequence.  Can't you too?

  5. You can buy a wrench for the street cut-off at any "big box" store. Yes cut it off.

  6. yes the water company will come out and shut it off for free.

  7. yes the main street shut off valve will need to be shut off.  depending on your city, you can shut if off BUT if it breaks you "MAY" be fined for damaging city property.

for the most part, be careful and try it.  if it's too hard to shut off with your "meter key" THEN call the city.
