i did in fact hook the wires under each s***w. should i hook the wire to both like you said and why

It will work fine the way you have it.  It is just that code calls for you to connect the two black wires and a pigtail together with a wirenut and the two white wires and a pigtail together with a wirenut and run those pigtails to the new outlet.  Do the same with the ground wire.

By the way, I looked at the answer from former ebayer before answering this.
