My fiance wants to know how much trouble it would be to get a patent on something and what he would have to do?

  1. Patents are pretty challenging. You have to show that your work meets certain guidelines for uniqueness, and that no one else already has a patent on something that's similar.

    Note the lack of definitive terms there. THAT'S what's so difficult.

    These kinds of intellectual property issues are complex at best. Tell your fiance to contact a good attorney.


  2. Normally the base price for a patent attorney to process a patent starts around $20,000 per patent and often increases substantially depending on the length of the patent search, whether or not you want to obtain a accompanying foreign patent, etc.
