2 times a week for the first time in my life of 20 years I have th drive the highway to get to my university . I am nervous. Have any of you driven the high way? Is it any big deal ?

I do not want ghost stories, or to be paranoid. I have suffered years of hermitacey and I do not need more crazy, paranoid thoughts. I am fighting with enough as it is.

I think it could be good for my confidence, and help me develop a little more as a young man.

It is sort of scary me though, the off and on ramps for the most part because it is sort of hard to gage my speed to theres when they want on.

Any thoughts for reassurance ?

  1. I think what you are taking on is great!  Pretty soon you will get used to it and what seemed so daunting will feel quite natural.

The way to deal with the on and off ramps is to match your speed to the others and just slip in and out of the gaps.  If you are entering the flow of traffic, look for a gap and slip in while at their speed.

When others want on, that is their problem, not yours.  (However, the polite driver moves over if there is room to make it easy for them, as you will appreciate.)  Courtesy on the road is much appreciated by all.

    May I suggest two things?

        1.   Practice ahead.  If you can, take some test runs.  You may be stressing about this to such a degree that a few trips would help.  Know just where you are going, where and how to park once you are there, and so forth.  It will set your mind at ease.

        2.  Talk this out with someone.  Whether a counselor or a family member or friend, it would help to give voice to your worries about this, not so the other person could dismiss them, but so you could air them and dissect them piece by piece.  Find the most worrisome piece and work that out.

Good luck!  Coming out from being a hermit is GREAT!  Going to school is GREAT!  Driving the highway is GREAT!  Go for it!

  2. This is not a travel question. You should ask an experienced therapist whether highway driving is recommended or safe with your condition. If you and your therapist decide it's a good idea, I would also suggest watching the movie "Clueless". I recall a funny scene from that movie when an unintentional trip on a busy LA highway leads to passionate s*x.

Hope your condition is soon completely cured.
