To help or not to help?

I'm doing a voluntary program, that involves helping families with problems and offering support. Unfortunately I get the feeling that these people just take advantage, has anyone else had the same experience? Sensible answers please.

  1. regaurdless of how you feel, you are there to help, and that is what its all about.

  2. Helping can be demeaning, and is easily taken advantage of.  If you don't believe you are actually doing a good thing, then quit and do something you believe in, like walking dogs for the local humane society!

  3. What organisation to you work for?  For example, I know Homestart offers good support to it's volunteers.  If you are feeling fed up and taken advantage of, go and talk to your volunteer co-ordinator.
