  1. Why did Atticus Finch have to defend Tom Robinson?

    Since Tom was black, no one else would have given him a fair defense.  Atticus didn't exactly want to do it because he knew there would be pressure from the community (since he lived in the Jim Crow South.  What makes Atticus a "noble character" is that he didn't cave to this pressure and gave Tom the same defense he would have given a white man.

    Following the trial, why did Bob Ewell threaten Atticus?

    Because he gave Tom the same defense he would have given a white man.  Which was NOT the politically correct thing to do at the time.
