  1. That has got to be the most basic question ever.  Why don't you pick up your book and get the answers from that?  It can't take more than ten minutes, and they explain it flat-out!

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but you shouldn't be relying on Y!Answers to do your homework for you.  Especially for something so simple.

  2. i read that last year. Ugh i didn't like it but here's my answer:

Ok, Atticus's defense for Tom was that Tom could have never raped Mayella because he had only one good arm. But tom was found guilty anyway because he is black. I think i explained that right.

  3. OMG!!! im doing this for english aswell, will be sticking around for a good answer

  4. i did this two years ago.. its a really good book.. i hate tht betch.. i swear.. but ull understand when u read it.. lol

tom was found guilty because he was an african american who had a case against a white family in which white members where of the jury.. racism basically.. lol

  5. Tom was found guilty because of racism and prejudice.  In that society a black man would never be believed over a white girl.  There are numerous on line resources to help you with this novel, and with questions such as this one.  Many of them offer chapter summaries, list of characters, character sketches, discussions of themes, setting, imagery, and symbolism, etc.  Do a search for “study guides for To Kill a Mockingbird” etc., and you will find many sites.  Also, do a search here on yahoo answers for To Kill a Mockingbird and you will find a wealth of information.

  7. atticus clearly defends tom very well. the jury is very moved by atticus's ideas of why tom is not guilty. although, one can tell the tom was found guilty because of his race. back in the day that the book takes place, racism plays a great role in society.

  8. that's like one of the main things in the book, did you read it?

alright i will help you out, i read this book in early high school too c/o 04 i actually enjoyed reading it, and am going to believe you that you read it and are just having troubles because it is hard to understand some books sometimes...

Atticus wanted to prove to himself that no matter what anyone else thought he would try his best to defend Tom Robinson even though he was black because he didn't believe in racism and raised his children to never judge anyone by their color. Being the fact that back then was the time of racial segragation the courthouse was filled with people. Tom was accused of having raped Mayella Ewell, a white woman. She not only was raped, but also had been beaten on her right side of her face and had bruises on her arm and neck. When she finished her testimony, Atticus took over. Atticus became embroiled in a hostile world of hatred and prejudice. He bravely proved the innocence of his client. No one knew that Tom did not have a left hand and the bruises on Mayella's face were on her right side so he could not have beat her. Atticus uses the testimony about Tom's useless left hand to illustrate that, the white girl Mayella could not have been struck by Tom Robinson. She was savagely struck, beaten, and raped by someone who was left-handed, which was most likely her own Father. Atticus then argues that Mayella lied because she broke a code that prohibits a white woman from becoming sexually attracted to a black man, which was an unspeakable offense. Atticus proved to the jury that Tom was innocent. But the jury found Tom guilty, as charged, because of the color of his skin.
