I have heard that when you become vegitarian that your hair does not grow as fast because of the lack of protien but I just read a book (Skinny *****) that states that we get plenty of protien on vegan diets though. Any experiences with this? I am going vegan but I am also trying to grow really long hair. Thanks.

  1. My hair is so long that I can almost tuck it into my pants (I need a haircut!).  Hair growth is genetic.  Only extreme malnutrition should affect it.

  2. I never understood why people constantly tell vegans and vegetarians that we are lacking protein. Animal protein and animal fat is one of the worst things you can possibly eat. Prostate cancer and breast cancer have both been linked to a diet consisting of animal protein. There is enough protein in vegetables alone for you to be happy and healthy.. So if you never ate anything but vegetables ever again, you would definitely not be protein deficient. Ive been a vegan for a year and my protein and vitamin levels are normal.. (just went to the doctors). I have super long hair too! It almost covers my entire back and its really shiny. You'll be okay, trust me. And I love skinny b*tch! That book is awesome.

  3. I have been a vegan for a while and I've found just the opposite. I get plenty of protein from the whole grains, legumes, nuts, and soy products which comprise a large portion of my diet. My hair still grows just as fast, and you shouldn't be worried about veganism stunting any kind of growth.

You should first familiarize yourself with the vegan protein sources and develop a shopping/eating guide.

There are many helpful recipe websites out there, including one that I am starting. Feel free to take a look!

  4. I sometimes worry that I get too much protein.  I usually get about 70 grams per day without thinking about it, and this in on my lower protein days.  You'd be surprised how quickly all the protein from bread, veggies, legumes, soy products, and grains all add up.

It's hard not to get adequate protein, unless you survive on pineapple all day.

  5. Your hair will still grow long  - I had really long hair until about 2 days ago when I cut it off!  don't worry, this is obviously a myth that someone told you.

  6. Being vegan does not inhibit hair growth.  Vegans get plenty of protein without difficulty.

My hair is really thick, shiny, and almost to my waist- and it was shoulder length two years ago.

  7. You will get plenty of protein from other foods like beans, turnips, any leafy greens, pintos, zucchini, nuts, fruit...

And if you don't think you're getting enough there, you can always drink a supplemental protein shake.

Your hair and nails will still grow at the same rate if not more because you tend to eat more foods rich in protein and vitamins following a vegetarian diet.

    Good luck

  8. Vegans can get plenty of protein (beans, tofu, whole grain, nuts). One of my Veggie meats is 12 grams of protein per serving.

  9. I know vegetarians with very long hair.

  10. I'm vegan too and I'm trying to grow my hair long.

Vegetables are full of protien. Especially spinach. Tofu is great for protein too.

Here's a really helpful website on how to determine how much protein you need daily and what vegan foods you can eat to get protein.

  11. You can get plenty of protein being vegan.  You can have beans and nuts.  Also tofu.
