To plastic or not to plastic?

Question

I'm leveling a patch of the yard for another parking spot. I want to put rocks down to stop weeds, grass , etc. My ma says to cover the area with plastic first (it comes in a roll at gardening stores). I think just the rocks would do it. Input?

it is wise to put down plastic first to stop weeds from coming thru to save yourself work later.but if they do come thru you can kill them with hot water.

putting plastic down is old school, as there are some wonderful weaved landscape fabrics out there that will allow the water to go through. All plastic does is create pools of water alot, which can lead to problems with fungus and other heavy water situations. And it will not last half the time in the soil as  weaved fabric will.

I think you're better off putting down the plastic first.  Weeds will grow through rocks, but, they can't get through the plastic.

Rocks will not do it....weeds and grass will come right through.....you need to put the plastic down...landscape plastic has to go down on a certain side so be sure to read the dorections.  You also could use regular black  plastic which would be cheaper.

put the plastic down, it is a weed deterent. we have rocks in our trash can area and weeds are growing up thru it.

No plastic!  If you want to use landscape sheeting, get the newer biodegradable kind. It will last for several years but not be a nightmare when you choose to change your garden.

Weeds will grow no matter what. They start in the rocks/ or in dust and dirt that settles in the rocks.   Seeds are carried by wind and birds.  Without the plastic-the rocks will settle deep into the dirt as you drive on it, and when it rains.  And any weeds that start in the rocks, their roots will proliferate into the dirt making them harder to remove or kill.

The plastic is a good idea, get 6 mil. thick black plastic sheating.  They have it at Lowes/Home Depot.    Now if weeds start, their roots are contained in the rocks.   Just spray to kill them.

Also, mix stone dust in with whatever rocks you choose.  This dramatically increases its compactability.

If you put a layer of rocks 4 inches deep weeds won't grow. Otherwise plastic first.

Plastic is the barrier so the weeds dont get water , sun or anything. Plain rocks - they still will come thru.
