  1. it depends on the picture itself. some fade to exposure of normal light. but usually, photo albums will do.

  2. Look for a photo album with Archival capabilities to make sure your pictures don't get ruined.

Also, before you archive them make sure they get scanned at 300 DPI at least.  If they pictures get destroyed you will be able to print them again or posted them online

    Good luck!

  3. photo album.

  4. Don't stick a picture in an Album with any type of glue - eventually the acids will erode the picture.

Use albums marked as "Archival".  They're not cheap but will keep prints as new for many years

  5. I wouldn't use either. Regular photo albums use a light adhesive which may damage prints long term, and scrap books may have pages that are slightly acidic, which will fade the image and make the paper brittle.

If these are important photos I would, as suggest earlier, scan them in (just in case) and store them in an archival-grade album that uses either polyester or polyethylene pages as they are inert and will not adversely affect the prints.

I get most of my storage/presentation supplies here, but there are many other sources:

  6. I'd say the bottom line is you should get your photos scanned before making a scrapbook.  Companies like The Digital Convert in Chicago- http://www.thedigitalconvert.com -  will scan photos, photo albums, documents and other family keepsakes.  By scanning the photos, you preserve the quality of the photo now and can share your photos easily via the Internet, disc and view them even on the television.

Most scanning services (The Digital Convert is an exception) do not scan once the photos are mounted in albums.  Even if they do, it is still best to scan without plastic on top because there may be some reflections.
