To save energy is it better to run a portable a/c in the bedroom at night, or use the central a/c to cool the?

Depends on the wattage of a/c, i would say the portable would be cheaper as long as it has a thermostat that cuts out.

To save energy just get a ceiling fan in your bedroom.

The portable will keep the immidiate room cool, but the most important thing is having good insulation.  If your house is well insulated the whole place will stay cool using the cha. and probably be cheaper.

I would think it is better to run the portable unit, rather than turning your house into a refer. Preferebly I think it would be better to purchase an energy star ceiling fan and run that.

It's better to use a portable/window air conditioner, because it will only cool the room and save energy. Not only that, but those are made to save energy.

Be at equilibrium with the surroundings. Up to 33 degC one can manage with a fan.

Turn it off. Do you really need it when you're out cold?

How hot is it where you are? 30? More? Anything up to that, you can do fine with a fan, particularly if it's not to humid.

its better to plant Shade Trees outside the house so that eventually you wont be running the a/c at all...

or ultimately just suffer a bit... after all running a/c does contribute to global warming...

Depending on the size of the unit, a portable A/C unit can save some money. But not as much as you may think.
