To snip, or not to snip?

My dog is acting very dominant towards us, his owners.

If we take him for a play on the field he just will not return to us.

Even if we have treats!

So to snip, or not to snip?

  1. i don't think the snip will make him come to you any more than he does now you need to win him over show him you are in control and he needs plenty of love maybe he dint like your treats.lol

  2. Neutering won't make him come back, that's a training issue not a dominance one.  If you want to neuter then go ahead but don't do it in the hopes that it'll solve this problem because it won't.

In what way is he acting dominant towards you?

  3. do it.  It's healthier for the dog.  And if he's still having issues after your get him snipped, you need to work on obedience training.  Shock collars work realllly well

  4. Snip is good, it will make him to return, my friend who has germany dog before he had snip he woudln't return to my friend when call for him, and after he had snip he returns to my friend.  You should get about 6 metres long lead call for him if he doesn't come to you, lead him to you give him treat say " good boy!" after couple of tempts, keep long lead on just call him to see if he responds to you, tell him very good boy! give him treat and try do it when field is quiet contuine some trainning, If he doesn't come to you, don't pusihment him, cos he might think ur pusihmenting him for coming to you.  he will do fine!

  5. snip my dog used to run away since we had him snipped no probs

  6. your dog needs trained properly but sniping him will calm him down and stop the dominance towards you but if you act like the "pack leader" or the Alpha" then you shouldn't have any problems

  7. it is better to neuter your dog but if you don't put in the training it won't matter either way, neutering will calm a male dogs urge to mate and sometimes help with aggression but the recall has nothing to do with hormones you need to put in some time training your dog and you will see a world of difference

  8. You don't say how old your dog is - this is significant because at about 4-8mths some puppies that used to come when called don't come back, it's not dominance it's a stage in development.

If you neuter your dog before it is fully grown then you will open the door to problems, like hip and joint problems, thyroid and hence weight problems and even some cancers. This is because the hormones needed to develop the body's system naturally stop being produced. What I didn't realise is that the bones grow at different rates and need the hormones to tell them to stop growing, without these hormones they grow too long, and put pressure on hips and joints, can bow etc. The earlier a dog is done the bigger it will grow.

Depending on the dog, physical maturity is usually between 12-14 mths, after which time, castration or spaying will cause no physical damage(other than that intended!)

I'm not against neutering, just believe after a lot of research that there is a correct age to do it!

If you do have a dominant dog, then training can also deal with this.

    Good luck

  9. Funny question.

If your dog is not of show/breeding quality it is best to snip.

    Your dog wont miss them!

However I think you should take him to training classes too.

Giving him the snip will not make him come when called, training does.

    Good Luck.

  10. snip. its surprising as to how many dogs lose their dominance once they've been fixed!

  11. Snip.. And then after i'll snip your tiny thing

  12. Snipping him will not make him more obedient!!! It will just make him less dominating!

He needs to be trained correctly!

Sounds like you're doing a great job so far.. not!

  13. I assume by snip you mean get it spayed or neutered?

Getting your dog fixed is a good idea in general and can decrease aggression. However regular exercise and training can also take care of the problem. You don't say what type of breed it is but all breeds need regular activities. Find a good local trainer and take an obedience class, it will be good for the dog and allow you to bond with him.

  14. Neutering (was about to say euthanisation then!) won't guarantee that your dogs behavioral problems will diminish. He's obviously used to being the dominant member of your pack and so by neutering it may lessen slightly but this is a training issue. However, no matter what you should neuter him for health reasons.

  15. if u dont want to snip him u have to dominant him the best way to do that is when he trys to dominant u take him down to the ground and hold him down until he submits completely it make take a few times be consitant

  16. You don't say how old your dog is or what breed, information which is needed before giving an informed answer. However, a bad recall is not a dominance issue. The person who told you you do an Alpha roll (holding him down) is giving irresponsible and dangerous advice as s/he doesn't know what breed, the dog's size or yours! Being dominant does not involve showing you are physically stronger, it involves being consistent in training. If he won't come back, don't let him off the lead until you have practised in an enclosed area. Take him to training classes where you can learn how to train him effectively.

  17. You need to get him fixed and than hire a trainer as he has learned this behavior because you have not taught him that you are the one in charge.
