I have heard that these birds prefer to climb or forage on the ground rather than fly, so I wondered if clipping is necessary.

  1. Parakeets do like to forage, but they will fly if they think they have to, and sitting on a hand when they aren't used to doing so is an excellent excuse. It isn't absolutely necessary, but it does make it a lot easier--otherwise it will always be trying to fly off your hand, which makes it hard to tame a bird. Wing-clipping doesn't hurt the bird at all, and it prevents it from flying into walls, windows, mirrors, etc. and hurting itself.

  2. It's ALWAYS good to clip a bird's wings when you first get it. It'll help it accept the fact that it can't escape from you when you're handling it.

Linnies are sweet little birds anyway, so "taming" is a very relative term. If you get one from a private breeder, in all likelihood, its wings will be clipped when you get it -- and it'll probably need very little "taming" -- just time to get used to its new home.

  3. Yes. A bird who can fly away from you whenever it wants and wherever it wants is in control. Later on, if it is really tame, then you can stop clipping its wings but for now I would strongly recommend keeping its wings clipped.

  4. Yes, a frightened bird can easily hurt itself, especially in a new environment.  I have seen one fly into a wall and drop dead... no joke!  Clipping is always the best option when you are training your bird.  Not only will you avoid injury but a bird is more likely to pay attention when it can't fly away from you.  Once your bird realizes he can fly and you can't, good luck getting him to learn anything.  Hope this helps...

  5. no!!!!!!!!!! you should not get your birds wings clipped. maybe you should teach the bird not to fly away or around so the next time you think about doing that you should think about training the bird.

    hope i helped=D
