  1. You don't have to substitute cake.  You can make them there favorite meal.  I know that, that is what I do.  I ask them what they want to eat and then I make it for them.

  2. I have semi-suar free kids. They are taught to eat healthy, but given freedom every now and then. Whenever we are going to give them a treat, we use choices(ex would you like carrot sticks or cookies). You'd be suprised with them how often they pick the healthy option.

Anyway, we let the kids eat birthday cake on their birthday. Try sugar-free ice cream maybe?

  3. Sugar free brownies that I found on allrecipes:

    1/2 cup margarine

    1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

    2 eggs

1 cup granular sucrolose sweetener (eg. Splenda™)

    3/4 cup all-purpose flour

    1/8 teaspoon salt

    1/4 cup skim milk

    1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1 (1.4 ounce) package sugar free, chocolate fudge flavored instant pudding

    1 cup skim milk

    DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8x8 inch pan.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt margarine and cocoa together, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. In a large bowl, beat eggs until frothy. Stir in the sucrolose sweetener. Combine the flour and salt; stir into the egg mixture then mix in the cocoa and margarine. Finally stir in the 1/4 cup of milk and if desired, the walnuts. Pour into the prepared pan.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted into the center, comes out clean. To make frosting, Mix together the sugar free chocolate pudding mix and 1 cup skim milk using an electric mixer. Mix for about two minutes or until thick. Spread over cooled brownies before cutting into squares.

and sugar free fudge pops. My kids love those.

I try to keep sugar to a minimum, but my kids do get cake and ice cream on birthdays. if you are doing this for health or religious reasons- those brownies are really good. My kids love them.

  4. I had sugar free kids until they were 6.  I did not take it so far as to take away the birthday cake.  If you give your kids ice cream then maybe try an ice cream cake without the chocolate and the crunchies.

There is no issue with your kids getting sugar in their cake, my kids have no cavities and I gave them their sugary birthday cake.

  5. My kids are fed regular diets.  Sugar in moderate amounts does not seem to bother them or me .

  6. I don't consider my daughter "sugar-free". I try to teach her (by words and example) to make smart decisions about food a way of life. I see nothing wrong with an occasional treat of M&Ms or Skittles, sometimes even Kool-Aid (OK, now that we do use Sugar-Free...lol) or slushies. I figure as long as the majority of our diet is healthy, there's nothing wrong with treating yourself sometimes. So, for her birthday, we just do a regular cake.
