Do you have a habit of throwing certain dishes together without a recipe, it turns out the best you've ever made and then you can't remember everything and how much you used? I do this with meatloaf and with Potato salad as well. Dang...I wish I could remember what I threw in that meatloaf the last time I made it.

Poll: Breadcrumbs or crushed crackers

  1. Breadcrumbs FTW!

  2. I refer to those as "surprise" dishes, because I too am surprised when they come out well, and surprised that I can't recreate them. :-)

Poll: Breadcrumbs, easier to add herbs to.

  3. i do the same thing. i never measure the amounts of the ingredients nor do i right em down. but my dishes still turn out good if i do say so myself.

    breadcrumbs

  4. That is the only way I cook, making it up as I go, so sometimes the meatloaf is just right on at other times it is falling apart, or has too much/not enough of something in.

It is still edible but not always something to be ptoud of

    Breadcrumbs.

  5. Both. Depends on the pantry. Mostly oatmeal in Meatloaf. Breadcrumbs if out of oatmeal, and saltines as a last resort, due to watching the salt content.

I have done what you have so many times that now I keep a wire bound 6x9" hardcover notebook and pen in the kitchen for just that purpose. And skinny post its for tagging pages. I don't catgorize just jot them down in the order I cook them up.  So I do some page turning to find one I want to make up. Now I have quite a collection and my Husband is thrilled. I would come up with something outstanding and not save the recipe. Now I can repeat it. He is so much happier.

  6. LOL ...... yes, I do enjoy just throwing some of my regular dishes together too and others I still follow the recipes for and just make some minor adjustments ...... yes, I do try to write things down when something turns out really well but I always seem to forget a few things I out in ...... LOL ...... I know how you feel = )

Breadcrumbs ..... one of my favorite adjustments for meatloaf is to use Italian breadcrumbs, add a little basil, oregano, and/or garlic and making a marinara or spaghetti sauce to use on it instead of ketchup.

  7. Nah, I usually take a recipe and tweak it to my liking so I have a base to go off of.  I am not good enough to completely wing it

    Breadcrumbs

  8. I do that all the time, and could kick myself every time something turns out good.  But I'll never learn!!!  LOL

I've made meatloaf with milk soaked bread, bread crumbs, cracker crumbs, seasoned stuffing mix...  pretty much anything - just to try it once...  I've even used oatmeal (I ground it in my processor to make it more flour like in texture)

  9. I used to enjoy cooking, but now its like a burden so I eat easy mac the majority of the time.

I have done that before.  I just throw a bunch of stuff that I think taste good, and see if it taste good together.  I founded my own chicken tetrizini recipe that way.

Ritz cracker crumbs.  I dont eat meatloaf, but those things are badass.
