  2. Photons from the sun impact with the water molecules in the dress, transferring some of their energy to the water and causing the molecules to heat up. When molecules gain enough kinetic energy, they escape from the tiny water droplets in the cloth, turning into water vapor. This decreases the amount of water in the dress by a tiny, tiny bit - but it happens many billions of times over, and eventually all the water is gone.

    In contrast, if you left the dress in the shade, there wouldn't be so many photons available to excite the water molecules, and  evaporation would proceed at a much slower rate.
