If your cable system says yes they are full of it. TIVO has a built in digital tuner. The only things that you might not be able to access are the "select/order now" buttons for pay-per-view. That would require a phone call to order.

Hi fromatoms2adam,

Your Series 3 or HD TiVo will take cable cards internally so it will not need a set top box but if you want to watch channels other then what TiVo is recording you will need a set top box for your TV.

Your cable company will come to the house and put the cable cards in your TiVo.
