Question:

To wax or not?

Hi! I'm about to but my snowboard away until next season. :( My board is entry level Forum Recon (MSRP $300, paid $150) with an extruded base. They say extruded bases are "low maintenance."

I read that I should wax the board for storage so it doesn't dry out... I'm wondering is it worth paying wax job on a such a "cheapy" board? What temperature wax should I use if I'm not going to be riding it?

I'm confused... I read extruded bases require more frequent waxing since they absorb less, but then that means "more" maintenance...

I'll probably will use this board for one more season and get a more advanced board.

  1. Yes, wax it.  Go to the Goodwill store and buy an old electric iron, go to a grocery store and buy a pound of canning wax. Heat the iron and apply the wax to the iron, drip it on the base in a "S" pattern. Then iron it smooth, the iron should be hot enough to melt the wax without it smoking. Be sure to inspect your board for damage, and check the bindings also.

  2. yeah, waxing it for the summer would definitely help.

I use oneballjay wax and it work great, its rub on, and really cheap, and works hella good

  3. Waxing your board will, well, prevent it from drying out. so unless you want a slow dry board next season just let it go.

  4. Extruded bases are high maintenance my friend.  you need to keep the base waxed very well.  If your worried about paying for waxing jobs, its best to learn to do it yourself.  It's pretty simple, just look onto youtube for tricks and tips.

In terms of waxing a cheapy board, you should still wax it, unless you want to keep it as a memento and not ride it.  Not waxing your board equals no fun on the slopes.  Temperature wise, ask your local shop and tell them where you normally ride, they'll inform you of what temperature wax you should use.
