To what extent is it true that you can earn on-line through data entry?

Hey i am student starting off my undergraduate programme. To what extent are these online earnings real? I have heard several cases where it has been hoax. Does anybody work online and earn money on clerical work or filling questionnaires out here?

I have hundreds of friends and associates......none of the guys or girls have ever made any money on these Internet businesses......if they had they would be talking about it and I would be in on it........SCAM
