where's the cheapest place to do it, with the best locals? i'm thinking of volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary in costa rica, but i think there might be too many english speaking tourists to facilitate true spanish immersion. your thoughts and experiences, please!

  1. Guatemala is by far the least expensive place in Latin America to learn Spanish.

Quetzaltenango(Xela),Guatemala has several good one on one immersion learning programs with less distractions than Antigua** and Xela also has plenty of volunteer opportunities.

I think your concerns about Costa Rica are valid. The most effective way to learn another language is by complete immersion.

**Antigua is a beautiful city with lots of history that you should visit if you go to Guatemala, but unless you are really disciplined it is much too easy to revert back to speaking English while you are there....Just my humble opinion.

  2. Los Angeles.

  3. Why do you need to go to a foreign country when there are 12 million illegals here?

  4. It depends on what you want. For a clear accent and the best Spanish grammar: Colombia, it's not expensive. Of course you can fins some other countries that are cheaper, they don't have such a good Spanish though.

  5. Lots of inexpensive schools/homestays in and around Antigua Guatemala.
