Question:

Toad in the Hole?

I know that toads are an endangered specious and I do consider myself fortunate that they have taken up residence in my green house, but I need to know is do they eat veggies? My runner beans have been nibbled,I have lost nearly all of my greens. I did think that it was mice, as holes are appearing all over the place, but while trying to water out the holes, a toad appeared., (I did not know that they live in holes, so you could say we have 'toads in the holes!'). I do hope someone will be able to shed some light on this as it is soul destroying watching you veggies been eaten, like this. By the way I grow everything 'oh natural' (fed up with people saying organically as if it were something new and trendy).

All the best to all natural gardeners!

  1. Yep, sounds like the slugs have been having a munch.

I had slug trouble until I found a totally natural way to get rid of them.......bird seed!  I put a big handful of bird seed in one of my hanging baskets a few times a week.  After a few days, the local winged-wildlife found it and spread the word (at times it's like Alfred Hitchcock The Birds out there!!).

Anyhoo, the sudden arrival of these feeding birds means they also feed on the slugs that are still sliding about on the patio early morning.  The end result - my beans, peas and all other fruits and veg are totally nibble free.

  2. Toads in your garden will mostly eat insects.

I reckon slugs are eating your veggies.

  3. Thought you was asking about sausages in Yorkshire pudding my favourite

  4. They will eat the insects....no your veggies. Look for other varmints.

  5. Toads are not eating your veg. Its most likely Slugs which is why you have Toads in there, they are after the Slugs.

Toads burrow down into the soil to keep cool, or find a hole or brick to crawl under.

Please do NOT put/pour tap water onto a Toad or Frog, you are likely to burn their skin causing them pain.

  6. Ok, toad in the greenhouse.  As far as I know, toads don't tunnel but they will burrow, they also eat bugs but not veggies.  I think the toad is a coincidence, they like to shelter in protected spots, under broken pots, wood piles, cool, damp places.  I'm in frog territory here in the PNW not toad but that's my understanding from PBS.  I think you have mice or rats and the toad just rfound a convenient spot to hang out in your greenhouse.  I'd give him somewhere else to live, toads still will eat your insects, and start to lay pavers down on the floor of your greenhouse and an upright edging of them around the perimeter.  I would hope that that will stop your midnight diners.

I'm growing everything without as well and a fence is working well for me.  We had a neighborhood squirrel die off last year (poison?  we don't know) and so far there's been very little robbery or digging.  I wish you luck!
