Tobias Kamke, Andrey Golubev advance in qualifying draw – If Stockholm Open 2011
Third seed in the qualifying draw, Tobias Kamke of Germany faced limited resistance in his matchup against Carl Bergman of Sweden in the second round qualies of the If Stockholm Open on Sunday.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of Stockholm, Sweden, with the local wildcard entrant suffering a crushing straight sets defeat at the hands of the German. Kamke wrapped up victory at 6-2, 6-3, in merely 75 minutes of play to earn a place in the final round qualifiers of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
It was a pretty one-sided matchup, with the German dominating for most of the time. Kamke’s 71 per cent precise serve earned him 23 out of 31 first serve points in the matchup to come out as the winner. He crafted a total of 17 break opportunities in the matchup and just three of them proved sufficient to drive Bergman out of the competition with ease.
The Swede competition didn’t register a single break point in the entire matchup, squandering away three precious break chances in the game to remain at a disadvantage. Bergman’s bleak baseline defence invited his opponent to nail cracking winners down the line. Kamke was assisted to victory by plenty of unforced errors from Bergman in the contest and he reeled off 72 out of 124 total points being played in the competition to win the matchup.
Kamke will take on the seventh seeded Kazakh opponent, Andrey Golubev, in the qualifying competition to make it to the main rounds of the If Stockholm Open. Golubev had a stiff contest with the unseeded Australian, Peter Luczak, in the second round of the qualifiers, defeating him in three sets, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3, to book a battle with Kamke in the final round.
It was an evenly poised contest, with some intense tennis being witnessed from the two contestants. Luczak fired 12 aces in the matchup and Golubev answered him with 26 thudding aces to wrap up victory in his name. The Kazakh secured 51 out of 60 first serve points in the matchup and converted one out of three break points to drive his opponent out of the competition.
No serve breaks were seen in the opener and the seventh seeded Kazakh had to go through a tie breaker round to clinch it at 7-6(5). Luczak registered the first serve break of the day to bag the second set but Golubev did the same in the final set to register his convincing victory in the end.
