Tobias Kamke battles past Moritz Baumann into the second round – Roller Open 2012 CH
Fourth seed, Tobias Kamke of Germany, survived a meltdown in the middle of the contest to overcome his countryman, Moritz Baumann, in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the first round of the ATP Roller Open in Petange, Luxembourg on
Sunday.
The German needed one hour and 46 minutes to beat his opponent in a close match.
Kamke came roaring in the match, breaking his opponent in the first and third game to race to a 4-0 lead. Baumann succeeded capturing his serve in the fifth to open his account but he could not come even close to his higher ranked
compatriot, losing it 2-6.
Ranked 90th in the world, Kamke gave a mixed performance on his serve in the first set. The 5ft 10in tall hit only one ace and 45 percent of the first deliveries. The German had an impressive conversion rate, securing
eight of the 10 first and nine of the 12 second serve points. Kamke made the real difference by bagging 14 of the 19 first return points. The 26-year-old did not come across any break threat and utilised two of the four of the he created.
Kamke and Baumann traded a single breakthrough in the opening 10 games of the second set, equalising the score at 5-5. Baumann grabbed two back to back after that to win 7-5.
The German banged in three aces but also made five double faults, hitting 62 percent of the first serves and grabbing 18 of the 26 points on them in the second set. On the other hand, Kamke pounded three aces and made just three
double faults. The German, though, could not perform well on the crucial moments, as he failed to save any of the two break points he faced and converted one of the two he received.
Kamke and his opponent broke each other’s opening serve to square off the score at 1-1. The German claimed four games in a row to race to a 5-1 lead. Kamke allowed his countryman to reduce the deficit to 2-5 but nothing more than
that, closing the encounter bears loss.
Most of the statistics of Kamke’s game were poor, as he committed three double faults and hit just 41 percent of the first serves, pocketing four of the 13 second delivery points.
The German contender is drawn to meet France’s Vincent Millot or Josh Goodall of Great Britain in the second round.
