Tobias Kamke eases past Flavio Cipolla in the opening round – Mercedes Cup 2012
Local contestant, Tobias Kamke, trashed the Italian veteran, Flavio Cipolla, in straight sets at the Mercedes Cup 2012 on Tuesday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the 28-year-old to secure a spot in the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Stuttgart, Germany.
The German rising star took down Cipolla in their first match-up at this outdoor clay court tournament. He required one hour and 22 minutes securing a spot in the round of 16 and taking lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the world number
93.
Kamke made stormed into the Tennis Club Weissenhof and drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite squandering his edge in the very next game, the German broke his opponent’s serve again in third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead.
He then held his remaining serves and cashed in another break chance in the last game to register the opener with 6-3 score line.
Ranked 98th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Kamke improved his winning ways in the following set and swiped entire serves without facing any real challenge. He got the breakthrough in the last game after capitalising on one
out of four break opportunities and clicked the set with a 6-4 win.
All in all, the German spilled several double faults and nudged up a lower first serve share of 57 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 67 per cent. However, he brilliantly availed 26 out of 33 points on it and converted four out of seven break chances to
pocket the match.
Next challenge for Kamke is the second seed, Juan Monaco, who received a first round bye after being the top four players at this tournament.
Another local challenger, Bjorn Phau, stole the show later that day. He was broken once but cashed in four out of 10 break chances to register a 6-3, 6-3 success in one hour and 29 minutes. Phau sealed the match by bagging 67 points and committing fewer
errors.
