Tobias Kamke strains pass Donald Young to reach the quarterfinals – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
World number 96, Tobias Kamke of Germany stood victorious against the unseeded American competitor, Donald Young, in the second round encounter of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Wednesday.
The eighth seed German toiled hard for one hour and thirty eight minutes before Young finally submitted in straight sets 6-7(3), 4-6, to let Kamke into the round of eight of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour
250 tournament.
It was an enthralling contest being played at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, United States. Young fought well to pose some serious resistance to Kamke but to the dismay of the local crowd, the American
lost in the second set of the matchup.
The contest took off with aggression from both men and exchange of assertive winners down the line. Young got hold of the game at the start of the match and capitalised upon two successive double faults from Kamke to register the
first serve break of the day to lead 3-1 in the opener. The German’s serve reached merely 41 per cent accuracy in the first set, allowing Young to crack in some easy winners in the game.
Kamke quickly regrouped to avoid any further damage from his opponent and cracked in a timely serve break to bring the scores to even terms once again. A further exchange of serve breaks took the scores to 6-6, bringing in a tie
breaker round into play. Young lost his impetus in the decider and bagged just three points to lose the tie breaker round to the German at 6-7(3).
Once getting into the winning momentum, Kamke never looked back in the rest of the contest and went on to play his aggressive game to outplay his opponent in the following set. The American competed very well to hang in the second
set as well and broke the German’s serve once but had to suffer two agonising serve breaks from Kamke to fell out of the competition. Kamke finished off the proceedings by clinching the second set at 6-4, making his way to the quarter-final of the Campbell’s
Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
Up next for the German is Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France, who will face Kamke for a place in the semis of the tournament. The Frenchman made his way to the quarter-finals after he defeated the Taiwanese qualifier, Jimmy Wang,
7-5, 6-4, in the second round on Wednesday.
