Tobias Oriwol conquers Men’s 200m backstroke heats - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Tobias Oriwol of TSC conquered the preliminary rounds of Men’s 200m backstroke on fifth day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Saturday, March 31.
The 26-year-old Oriwol stifled hopes of his challengers and sprinted his way towards the finishing end to reach the final round as top contender for gold medal.
His immaculate effort remained almost two strokes ahead of his following rival, Charles Francis of PPO, as he tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute and 59.82 seconds.
Francis remained 0.48 seconds slower from Oriwol and appeared on the finishing end as second best swimmer by producing a time of 2 minutes and 00.30 seconds.
His effort was trailed by Matthew Swanston of NEW, who remained 1.61 seconds behind Francis and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 01.91 seconds to qualify for the final.
Subsequently, Matt Hawes of ROCS emerged as the fourth finest swimmer of the discipline, as he completed his swim in a time of 2 minutes and 01.96 seconds. Hawes was trailed by Adam Best of GO, who hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 02.61 seconds for fifth position.
Next was the Women’s 200m breaststroke qualifying rounds, where Martha McCabe of VAND spoiled the party of her competitors by finishing first in the discipline, McCabe proved her mettle for the playoff with an effort of 2 minutes and 27.57 seconds.
She was chased by Tera Van Beilen of OAK and Kierra Smith of LLSC, who stayed marginally behind her and posted a combined effort of 2 minutes and 27.64 seconds for second position.
The fourth finest qualification spot of the discipline was obtained by Annamay Pierse of VAND, who clocked an effort of 2 minutes and 27.96 seconds.
Tianna Rissling of AMAC snared fifth best qualification spot of the race as she remained almost one second slower from her former finisher and ended her four-lap breaststroke swim in a time of 2 minutes and 28.72 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended while these swimmers will contend each other in the playoff, where top three finishers will be awarded medals.
