Toby’s Corner will make his return in the General George Handicap after recovering from a leg injury
Graham Motion trained, Toby’s Corner, was doing so good in his sophomore season, and was looking like a strong contender for the Triple Crown last year, but all his hopes and expectations of him dashed to ground when after an amazing win in the Grade 1 Wood
Memorial last April at Aqueduct injured his left hind leg.
It was a massive setback for Toby’s Corner in terms of Triple Crown glory, but it was a big boost for his connections when Dianne D. Cotter’s Toby’s Corner returned to Graham Motion for training last year in October.
The Florida bred son of Bellamy Road, out of mare Brandon’s Ride by Mister Frisky, Toby’s Corner worked at Palm Meadows for his return, as Motion assigned Eddie Castro to ride the colt on his return.
The pair shares a sacred chemistry, and the last time they were seen together was in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial handing, Uncle Mo his first loss, who finished third while Arthur’s Tale finished second. Toby’s Corner downed the 1 1/8 mile in 1 minute and 49.93
seconds.
After breaking his maiden back in 2010 at second asking by a staggering 11 lengths at Laurel Park as a juvenile, he stayed there and won an allowance/optional claimer to kick off his sophomore season. Both races at the Laurel Park were run over a distance
of a mile.
Out of 6 career starts, Toby’s Corner has won 4 times and turned in twice 3rd place finishes, which means the rampant colt, who is now 4, has never finished worse than third in his career.
“I am very excited but also a little apprehensive because this is a tough spot for his return,” Motion said. “He is the high weight (121 pounds) but at the same time he has run well at Laurel and I love the distance. There are pros and cons to coming back
in the General George, but the pros outweigh the cons.”
Motion has spotted a tough spot for Toby’s Corner in his return race, the Grade 2, $200,000 General George Handicap on 20 February, 2012, at Laurel Park, and he will be sent off as the 3 to 1 second choice for the race.
