Question:

Today They Announced Some Baseball Pitchers Hit The Batter With Intension

It was reported today as one of pro baseballs little told secrets, that pro baseball pitchers will pitch the ball to the batter and purposely attempt to hit the batter to keep them on their toes or for some kind on revenge. And if the batter is clobbered by the ball we usually see him throw the bat aside and run towards the pitcher and pummel him with his fists until the umpire can break up the brawl.

I have one question though. Has any pro pitcher ever killed a batter in doing so? Anyone have an answer to this inquiry?

  7. ray chapman died as a result of his beaning in the '20's.  I think he was with the Giants.

Tony Conigliaro had permanent vision damage ane had a brilliant career prematurely ended

  8. yea back in the old days batters did not wear helmets so you could get killed by the ball but that was before refences

  9. As previously mentioned, Ray Chapman of the Indians was hit by a pitched ball in 1920 and became to only "on field" major league casualty.  However, his beaning was not intentional.  The pitcher was Carl Mays who threw sidearm so the combination of the pitching motion, a ball that was in play for quite a while and the afternoon sky caused Chapman to never see the ball coming at him.

This incident emphasized the need for batting helmets but they didn't become mandatory until the 50's, some 30 years later.  The two things that resulted from this beaning was the elimination of the spit ball and the frequency in which the umpire will replace the ball.
