  1. Religious creation beliefs are based on faith, not science.

Many scientists, including myself, believe in God.  However, few, if any, believe in the creation scenarios presented in the Bible.

The creation parables don't need to be explained away.  Their function and utility just needs to be understood.

  2. Think back to those classical times: mythology was and (maybe) is an oral teaching device that served to educate an illiterate populace about history, religion, social standards and psychology, in the main, providing useful education with appealing entertainment. It could be dispersed by those talented with a good memory, presentation skills and vocal projection, like traveling drama groups and troubadours.

They had the advantage of tradition, where none felt like questioning their teaching of accepted wisdom; it was good enough for simpler times.

In our complex current context, few thinking people accept beliefs without question- they have heard too much bogus while growing up, and dogmatic statements from appointed authorities must be verified by printed word and image to hold as truth.

Science is not at fault, for searching out facts irrespective of dearly-held beliefs, when such beliefs vary from research and practical findings. Religious beliefs about creation become mythology by default, if they insist that our world and all living creatures were swept into existence in an eyeblink of time by some supernatural will.   'nuff said.
