Todd Bowles takes over as head coach after Dolphins fire Tony Sparano – NFL News
Head Coach Miami Dolphins Tony Sparano has been sacked from his post. He is the third NFL coach to be fired within two weeks. The announcement was made by the team on Monday in a press conference held by Dolphins owner Stephen
Ross.
Ross said that it was time to make a change for the betterment of the team. He said efforts will be made to find the right person for the post. Ross in his conference thanked Sparano again and again saying he had worked hard in
laying a strong foundation for the team.
The Dolphins have failed to win a single playoff game since 2000 and have been unable to reach the Super Bowl since 1984. They will also be missing the playoffs for the ninth time in a decade.
"The results speak for themselves. We're looking to becoming a winning organization, and I thought this was the best time to make the change and let us go in a direction that will allow us to become that." Ross said.
Sparano had come under criticism since the start of the year as the Dolphins kept losing seven straight games to fall to 0-7. The Dolphins did recover after that to win four games but the recent loss to Philadelphia Eagles saw
them fall to 4-9. Just a day after the loss to Eagles, Sparano was fired.
Miami’s assistant head coach and secondary coach, Todd Bowles will now be the acting head Coach for the time being. There are only three more games left for the Miami. While Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has his job safe
according to Ross and will help in finding a new coach.
"We're looking for the best head coach," Ross said. "It's important that the head coach and the general manager be able to work together, so you're not going to find someone who has a conflict to start with." Ross said.
Sparano was liked by the Dolphins team a lot. Running back Reggie Bush expressed disappointment over Sparano’s firing on his twitter account, saying he was a great coach and will be missed. Sparano with a record of 29-32 had accomplished
several feats for the Dolphins which included the AFC East title in 2008 and the Miami reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
Earlier, Todd Haley of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jack Del Rio of Jacksonville were fired as Head Coaches.
