Todd Dodge fired at North Texas
The North Texas Mean Green have fired their head coach Todd Dodge after the team suffered a loss to Florida International University on 16 October.
Dodge was hired by the Mean Green in 2007 after winning 79 of his last 80 games with Southlake Carroll High. The club brought in the inexperienced head coach with the hope that he could turn the program around and get them to the top of the Sun Belt conference.
Unfortunately, Dodge was far from getting the team back on its feet, as he went a dreadful 6-37 while in charge. The school’s athletic director, Rick Villarreal, stated that the coach had to win seven games in the 2010 season in order to keep his job. The
loss to FIU dropped the Mean Green’s record to 1-6, making it impossible for Dodge to achieve his goal.
Dodge was hampered by injury woes, which have been following the team around for the entire season. The club had 14 players out to injury and was forced to play their fourth string quarterback Chase Baine against FIU.
UNT will begin their search for a new head coach early next week. The team seems to be leaning towards former Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles head coach Jeff Bower. Bower was able to put together a strong record during his time with the Golden Eagles,
going 119-83-1, with 14 winning seasons.
The fact that Villarreal attended Southern Mississippi as a student and was an administrator with the school before leaving for UNT definitely lends a favouring light towards the chances of Bower being hired.
The addition of Bower should provide the program with more credibility, as they will be bringing in an experienced college coach.
Until the school is able to find a head coach, offensive co-ordinator Mike Canales will take over as the interim bench boss.
