Todd Frazier likely to be Cincinnati Reds’ third baseman next year – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said on Monday, November 19, that the third baseman Scott Rolen will decide about continuing his career or retirement after having met his family. As to when the decision will be made public is only a matter of conjecture at this point in time.
"I talked to him at the end of the season, and he said he'd have to get with his family to decide if he was playing or not," Jocketty said.
For now Rolen is a free-agent after a season which was not much of a success given his past record. He could only appear in 92 games, hitting eight homers and 39 RBIs. Plagued by injuries, Scott was then replaced by rookie Todd Frazier at third base.
Being confined to disabled list due to a strain his left shoulder and periodic back spasms did not let the player be a regular fixture at third base.
While injuries remained a problem and will potentially be a source of problems again, Rolen will turn next year. Age will be a decisive factor in the days to come. That is the reason why the Reds have already come to a conclusion regarding the third base – as to who will replace him.
It is Todd Frazier.
"Right now, Frazier would be penciled in as our third baseman next year," Reds' general manager Walt Jocketty said.
Todd Frazier finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting with tremendous performance this past season. In the absence of Scott Rolen, Frazier proved a worthy replacement with his stellar defensive and offensive performance.
The 26-year rookie batter had 128 appearances during the season, hitting .273 with 19 home-runs and 67 RBIs. That consistency is what has actually booked a place for him.
With the decision regarding future pending at this point in time, Rolen already has a replacement in the form of Todd Frazier at third base. So in all likelihood, there will not be much difficulty for the Reds. That essentially shows the Reds’ preparedness to meet any and every situation.
