Todd Hamilton recalls his 2004 British Open win after missing the cut at Avantha Masters – Golf News
The American veteran golfer, Todd Hamilton, after missing the cut at the Avantha Masters in India, shared his memories of old times.
He said that ‘golf is very crazy’ while recalling his playoff win against Ernie Els at the Royal Troon in Scotland to raise the Claret Jug.
He stated that he is not particularly worried about the cut he missed at the DLF Golf and Country Club.
His golfing career is full of ups and downs, where downs have major dominance. So, his performance in the India’s richest tournament does not mean much to him.
The major reason for him to talk about this way was his past record, especially in the 2004 British Open, where he did not have a good recent past record to enter the tournament.
Therefore, he can repeat the same in the upcoming events, where he can prove his mettle as a world class player.
“I wasn't playing well. I barely made the cut the week before at John Deere, and I missed three cuts before that. I didn't do well in practice also but I took some key notes. And things happened at the end of the first round,” Hamilton shared about his 2004
performance.
He told how he made his way up to the top position, with an outstanding 35-ft birdie on the 18th hole.
“I finished on even-par that day and just that one stroke made a lot of difference. From over par to even par, I was relieved and that triggered something inside. And I still remember clearly the two-feet putt I had to make to win the playoff,” he said.
After he made the winning shot in the playoffs, he reached the hole and took the ball out of it.
According to him, he took it because he was used to doing the same after each and every hole that he played.
Later, when he was holding the ball in his hand, he realised that he did not need to go closer to the hole after he made the putt.
Therefore, he sunk the ball again and celebrated his maiden victory in the prestigious major tournament.
After his win, he never succeeded to register another win in any major tournament in his career.
However, he said that he believes that he had several other wins that make him feel proud. Especially, being the all-time leading money winner in his 12 years on the Japan Golf Tour while earning 11 wins in total.
