Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki shine as Colorado Rockies defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5 – Part 1
Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki put in a tremendous performance as they both homered to guide the Colorado Rockies over the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5 on Wednesday, April 6 at Coors Field in Denver.
The Rockies dominated most of the game as the Dodgers kept it close and fought hard throughout. It was an amazing game as both sides were looking to get on top early in the proceedings. The Rockies were looking to sweep the two game series as the Dodgers
were trying to tie it. However, Colorado managed to put in a brilliant effort and edge out the Dodgers for a decent win and a series sweep.
There was impressive game-play from both sides as the Dodgers’ Rafael Furcal managed to hit a fastball over to left-field but Carlos Gonzalez made a brilliant catch to stop the play.
Troy Tulowitzki explained his fondness for Gonzalez as he said, "That's why he's my favorite player, first of all, a guy that can change games on both ends is pretty special. Big play. Really, the defining play for me in that game and the reason he's one
of the best."
The Rockies’ Jason Hammel did a decent job with his pitching even though he was hit for two home-runs. Hammel was fortunate for the defensive skills of Gonzalez as he managed to squeak out a win for Colorado.
Dodgers’ Chad Billingsley struggled against the Rockies. Todd Helton managed to hit a three-run homer off Billingsley to take the Rockies to a 5-4 lead in the third inning of the game. Troy Tulowitzki followed up with a two-run homer off the Dodgers’ Blake
Hawksworth, to take the score to 7-4 in the fourth inning.
It seemed that the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching line-up was struggling against the Colorado Rockies’ batting line-up. The two homers by Helton and Tulowitzki managed to put runs on the board and take the Rockies into a commanding position over the Dodgers.
However, the Dodgers did manage to lead up until late in the third as Casey Blake tripled, allowing Furcal to score. This was followed up by Andre Ethier as he singled and this brought Blake home to take the score to 4-2 in favour of the Dodgers in the third
inning.
The Dodgers stayed in the game and were unfortunate that their pitching line-up was unable to contain the Colorado Rockies’ offence. Billingsley ended up giving away five runs off six hits in his three innings pitched. This was a poor performance by Billingsley
for the Dodgers, as the Rockies seemed to have gone after him during the beginning of the game.
