Todd Helton makes health count in tough workout programme
There is a tough contest awaiting the Colorado Rockies this season and even though, the off season period is far from over, spring training is almost a month away.
The prospect of having to contend with some of the best teams in the National League would lead any fan to believe there is a lot at stake. The club will be going up against the likes of Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and the San Diego Padres.
Competition will be tough and the chances for a place in the playoffs seem bleak.
Those probabilities look grim for every team in the National League West division. Only time will tell, which team makes the best effort in riding high in the regular season.
Nevertheless, with the challenge on and the contest ripe for engagement, one man is working out to make sure he is healthy for the regular season.
Rockies’, Todd Helton, has been a miss for his team thus far. However he is looking to put his worst record from 2010 behind him.
"I figured I'm at the point where I was going to push it", Helton said. "It really doesn't matter at this point. Going into the season, I needed to be stronger, regardless what it took. I wasn't going to baby it anymore".
Helton was meagrely effective last year as his batting average was .256 and he had an average slugging rate of .367 to show for himself. Furthermore, his home runs tally of 8 wasn’t even justifiable for his first baseman position.
He drove in 37 runs and scored 48 on his own. Helton is looking to put the bad string of plays behind as the major leagues are moving into play in April.
Last season, Helton had to deal with a back strain that required no surgical repair. His work ethic went right into his muscles. However, the problem with the player wasn’t his back, but his legs as speed failed him in his pursuit for optimal performance.
"There was not a new injury or anything like that", Helton said. "Mentally, there were probably a few injuries, just hurting my pride and all that stuff, I'm sure. Other than that, I was healthy. There was no excuse. I actually didn't see it coming. It's
just one day I went out there and it wasn't there. It was an uphill battle after that more than anything".
