Todd Herremans gets three-year contract extension from Philadelphia Eagles – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles continue to trust tackle, Todd Herremans, who was given a three-year contract extension by the franchise on Tuesday, March 13, 2012.
Herremans, who has been playing with Eagles since starting his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2005, has played at the position of offensive tackle and guard.
After signing a four-year rookie contract with Eagles, he played and started only four games in his rookie year.
He started all the 16 games in the regular season next year and signed a five-year contract extension, worth around $16 to 17 million, in December 2006. He also received a $5 million signing bonus.
He still had two year left in his contract, but Eagles are confident that the new deal is worth its salt.
Herremans commented after receiving the new deal:
"I had two years left on my deal so I realise this wasn't a necessity. It means a lot for the fact that they came to me and started this whole process. I am really happy with it.”
He added:
"Being able to spend your whole career in one city, it's pretty special and you don't see that anymore."
Meanwhile, Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid, has also expressed satisfaction on this development. While praising Herremans’ role in the team, Reid remarked:
"We are excited to be able to sign Todd to a new contract. Todd's intelligence, toughness, durability, and leadership are second to none. Very few players in the NFL can play at an extremely high level at both the guard and tackle positions and Todd has
done that for us.”
Eagles were considered as favourites to win the National Football Conference (NFL) East division title as well as one of the strong contenders of winning the conference championship last season.
However, the team failed badly at the start of the season. It hit back hard and won its last four games, but could not qualify for the playoffs.
While reflecting on the last season, Herremans said that the players took a little time to develop chemistry with each other. However, he also said that the team combined well towards the end and hoped that Eagles could get a shot at Super Bowl next year.
