Todd Pletcher will test out another Derby prospect called Ecabroni in the Sam F. Davis Stakes
Trainer Todd Pletcher is the kind who keeps his options open, and with the Triple Crown around the corner, you would expect him to be ready with his slew of three-year-olds.
As time draws closer, Todd Pletcher will shuffle and look at his options more closely based on the starts his new sophomore string produced, going into the first leg.
With already promising prospects like Algorithms, Discreet Dancer, El Padrino and Gemologist, one would assume that the conditioner’s arsenal is loaded, but he would surprise you at every turn, and come up with a new sensation.
Well it is too early for the newly turned 3-year-old colt, Ecabroni to be ranked as Pletcher’s sensation who would rock the tracks, but something about this colt is special, and he does prefer taking on fields, approaching the task in wire to wire fashion, and a hint of cockiness about his run which cries out to the rest: “catch me if you can!”
The Smoke Glacken colt likes setting the pace, and on his debut on 8 December, 2011, Ecabroni went all out, but finished second as the Gulfstream favourite.
He was close to the winner, One Sock Down, and 6 ¼ lengths clear of the third place finisher, Teeth of the Dog.
He approached his second maiden special weight race in the same manner, and broke his maiden at second asking on 14 January, 2012. The gray/roan colt finished the job in wire to wire fashion, defeating Rise Against by a margin of 2 lengths after being sent as the 2 to 5 choice.
Out of mare Miss Fury by Unbridled’s Song, Ecabroni is owned by St. George Stable, and he will be making his third start of his career in the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes, a race that Todd Pletcher has gone on to win four times in the last six years.
Pletcher will be hoping to take his tally up to five this year with Ecabroni, against a wide open field of eleven 3-year-old males, going over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on 5 February, 2012, at Tampa Bay Downs.
The Sam F. Davis Stakes is a prep race for the Grade 2, $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby, which will be a great race before the Triple Crown for Pletcher’s prospect.
