but this is not sudden. It has always been green, or green and brown. Not diahreah. Just normal stools. I thought it was normal and never said anything. But recently two family members said they didn't thik it was normal. He doesn't eat a lot of green veggies or fruit to cause this. He is a healthy 3 year old boy and is actually big for his age. Any ideas???

  1. If the texture is OK and it isn't loose or mucousy he's probably fine.

Foods with blue dyes in them can do this. Breakfast cereals like Fruity Pebbles, Lucky CHarms, Fruit Loops always do it to my son.Juices, drinks, and  obviously, Peas.

If he feels OK and the docs know about it and aren't worried, relax.

  2. your kid might be getting too much iron, talk to your Pediatrician, it's not normal, but it might not be too bad, perhaps he will recommend a change on your child's diet.

  3. I think it is fine, it has to be something he is eating. but ask the doc to be sure.

  4. Digestion happens a lot faster in children and when food is digested quickly it doesn't break down all the way....hence, the green color.

  5. Hey.

Well, green poo is usually caused by food related subjects. If he's eating a lot of plants and green veggies, it might just be the chlorophyll from that acting as some kinda weird c**p-dye. Also, some foods that aren't even green can cause green stools, specifically foods that are rich in iron.

Also, if he's in school, be sure he isn't getting anything bad there, that might cause this, such as maybe jello, popsicles, you name it.

As for a non-food related idea, the food might be passing through the large intestine too quick. The fact is that all c**p is generally green at the beginning, due to the color of bile (green.) It's the large intestine that makes it brown. However, if it goes through too quick, the color doesn't really change. Medically, this is referred to as DCTT (Decreased colonic transit time) or for the less intelligent of us, Turkey Poo.

Get him checked out at the doctor first. I'd hate for you to go all wild, and find out he's just been eating crayons behind your back :P
